Extraordinary nurses recognized at Roosevelt General Hospital

PORTALES, NM, Tuesday, December 17, 2024Hanna Kinley, RN from Clinic and Emergency Department and Cheyenne Banther, RN from RGH Med-Surg Unit of Roosevelt General Hospital were recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

The nomination submitted for Hanna read as follows, “She let me watch TV on the computer in the Emergency Room, it really calmed my anxiety down and made me feel happy.”

The nomination for Cheyenne read as follows, “All of the nurses involved in dad’s care were amazing. Each one of them listened to us and kept us very involved in his care. Each nurse had a very caring attitude and even though they were busy, they always took their time in meeting his needs. We could not have asked for better care.”

Contenders for the award comprised of Dale Brown, LPN, and Czarina Diangson, RN, from Surgical Services; Donita Hammond, RN, Reagen Karger, LPN, Kelsey Coakley, RN, and Austin Bender, RN from Med-Surg Unit; Sherry Renteria RN, and Joyce Malloy, RN from the Emergency Department.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at [hospital] are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Chief Nursing Officer Joseph Thrower, RN, MSN, stated “I am elated to recognize these nominees and winners. They represent the true meaning and spirit of nursing and representation of how we deliver care at Roosevelt General Hospital.”
