Governor Grisham visits Roosevelt General Hospital

PORTALES, NM, July 11, 2024 - On July 9, Kaye Green, CEO, and team welcomed Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales. Such hospital visits play an important role in member-driven advocacy, as the people who know New Mexico healthcare best take these opportunities to build relationships with, and communicate issues to, state leaders.

The Governor toured the facility and enjoyed open question and answer time with RGH leadership and staff. Also on the agenda was an overview presentation about RGH, a 24-bed rural hospital founded in the 1940s and governed under the Roosevelt County Special Hospital District and its Board of Trustees since 1999.

RGH currently has 280 full time employees and 17 employed physicians/providers who care for the surrounding communities. RGH offers a 24/7 physician-staffed emergency department, full range of diagnostic testing and imaging, active surgery program including general surgery, interventional pain management, and ophthalmology, an offsite Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy clinic, two rural health clinics, two specialty clinics (Portales & Clovis), and two behavioral health practitioners.

RGH has several construction projects in the works and new services planned. Funding mechanisms including capital outlay and other grants will make these improvements possible. Like all rural hospitals, however, RGH faces significant ongoing challenges and the team spoke with Governor Lujan Grisham about issues including increasing costs, continued provider recruitment struggles and the workforce shortage, community behavioral health needs that remain unmet and the necessity of future tort reform.

Significantly, the visit was a chance to thank the governor. Her support and signing of two important bills last legislative session, SB17 Healthcare Delivery and Access Act and SB 161, bridge funding for rural hospitals, will make a real difference at RGH and hospitals statewide.

Roosevelt General Hospital is committed to providing comprehensive patient care for residents throughout Roosevelt County, New Mexico and surrounding areas. RGH offers a 24/7 physician-staffed emergency room, full spectrum inpatient and outpatient services, general surgery, laboratory, imaging services, physical and occupational therapy, and respiratory services.
